Therapy: A Guide That Helps A Layman?
Updated: Jul 27, 2024
Therapy, psychotherapy, or talk therapy all refer to approaches used to support individuals in changing their beliefs, notions, and emotions that contribute to complications or suffering in their lives. It's a general word for linguistics that defines: through verbal and psychological approaches mental distress and psychological suffering can be cured.
Therapy can help an individual in different ways. It deals with a variety of issues, including managing symptoms of certain mental illnesses, dealing with trauma, and stressors at work or home, and grieving a loss.
Even if there are a lot of blogs on this subject, mine is simple and conscience enough for anyone to read. For my reader to gain a thorough grasp of this topic, I have attempted to include all relevant information.

This is a guide from where you will find all of your answers that you're looking for......
Heading #1: Does Therapy Work Like Magic?
Therapy doesn't work like magic and it always takes time. The time varies based on individual issue
Studies indicate that therapy helps with individual's anxiety disorders, mood disorders, psychotic disorders, eating disorders, impulse control and addictions disorders, personality disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder and post traumatic disorders . In reality, research indicates that over 75% of individuals who begin with psychotherapy usually benefit from it.
Finding solace in your family and friends is not the answer. All individuals deserve an environment that allows them to express themselves without fear of criticism for who they are.
Heading #2: Why Therapy?
This is a question every individual asks themselves before starting this process?
Every individual can live his own life. There is no right or wrong. Every individual seeks therapy for different reasons. There are no guidelines which have to be followed by individuals that define who can take therapy and who cannot. In real life therapy can be beneficial for one individual and will not work for other. Most individuals turn to therapy because of their anxious feelings, evasive and melancholy behavior in a disruptive way. Those individuals whom could not find solace in therapy, can find that other elements of their life, such as self-awareness, self-reflection, books, friendship, kinship, job, or participation in sports, that would provide similar benefits to those of therapy.
Every individual has a separate entity and all of us have different needs. When it comes to self-help ,we should understand that every individual cannot fit in the same size. Don't be dazzled by those who give you quick solution to your problems. Because therapy is a slow process.
Heading #3: How Does Therapy Work?
Once you identify that individual whom you want to work with. Then you arrange a meeting with them. During the first visit, which is often called an intake session, the therapist get to know his/her client and then work on his goals and treatment. The therapist ask certain questions regarding:
Why did he/she come?
What are his/her symptoms?
How can life be better?
A few questions encompassing you're, presenting complaints, childhood, adult, relationships, education, job and living conditions.
The therapy goals/aims of the client
Heading #4: How I Begin With Therapy?
You should be proud of yourself because you have taken the first step in healing your mental health. Since taking therapy is an individual personal choice, it is vital to understand what kind of environment and time-frame could work for them. For example you want to opt for physical therapy or on-line session. An individual when looking for a therapist he/should consider certain factors such as age, gender, religion, race and cultural proficiency. An individual can always change his/her therapist if he feels uncomfortable with his/her therapist.
“A good counselor can be the guiding light that helps you navigate through the darkest storms.” Unknown
Heading #5: Different Approaches Of Therapy?
It depends on the therapist's expertise and individual needs, that the therapist selects an approach for the treatment. Different approaches are as follow:
Acceptance And Commitment Therapy (ACT)
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), poses an interesting idea for thoughts; instead of trying to change, fight, or repress our inner experiences (e.g., thoughts, emotions, sensations, etc.), we can focus on changing how we relate to them.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a talking therapy that can help you manage your problems by changing the way you think and behave.
Couples Therapy
Couple therapy in which a psychologist helps couples solve problems with their relationships
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is a type of talk therapy (psychotherapy). It’s based on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), but it’s specially adapted for people who experience emotions very intensely.
Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing Therapy
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychotherapy treatment that is designed to alleviate the distress associated with traumatic memories.
Family Therapy
Family counseling, or family therapy, aims to address psychological, behavioral, and emotional issues that cause family problems. Family members will work with a therapist to develop and maintain a healthy relationship.
Heading #6: Therapy In A Nut Shell
The process of therapy is slow. Thus, if you decide to continue with it, go ahead and initiate the process so you can see the outcomes. For some individuals, it might work, but not for others. You just have to figure it out yourself. You need to take the step yourself.
